What to watch at home this week/weekend

GoodFellas – ITV4 – Saturday 17th Nov – 22:10

Ray Liotta And Robert De Niro In 'Goodfellas'

Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece following the life of Henry Hill and his career in the Mob. A hugely influential movie with powerhouse performances by Robert De Niro (Heat), Ray Liotta (Narc) and the terrifying Joe Pesci (Lethal Weapon 2). Stand out scene between Harry and Tommy – “Funny how?”

The Hunt – BBC2 – Sunday 18th Nov – 00:30

Tense Danish film starring the always superb Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royal, Rogue One) as a teacher who is accused of indecent behaviour. This allegation quickly leads to the community turning on him, believing he is a paedophile. Very real telling of how a lynch mob is created following a misunderstanding. Powerful stuff.

San Andreas – Five – Sunday 18th Nov – 20:00

I have to admit that I love the Rock! This is an old-fashioned disaster film in the style of  70’s movies such as Towering Inferno. Of course, the Rock will save the day and its great fun watching him do it. Great effects and a supporting cast of Carla Gugino (Sin City), Alexandra Daddario (True Detective) and Paul Giamatti (12 Years a Slave).

DVD/Blu Ray of the week

The Tree of Life

tree of life

New 4k extended cut of Terrence Malik’s (Badlands, The Thin Red Line) masterpiece about nature vs nurture. It’s not for everyone with its whispered and pretentious voice-overs. However, in my opinion, it is the most visually stunning film I have ever seen. I could quite easily just watch with no dialogue. A quality cast of Brad Pitt (Seven, Fight Club), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar) and Sean Penn (Mystic River, Dead Man Walking) of overshadowed by Malik’s grand vision. Just have to let yourself go and let it wash over you!
