The true story of how Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert the Bruce outwitted the occupying English army during the 14th Century. Starring Chris Pine (Star Trek), Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) and Steven Dillane (Game of Thrones), this was a straight to Netflix (with limited cinema run) production directed by David McKenzie (director of the brilliant Hell or High Water – also staring Pine).
The film was cut back by the director prior to release and it shows. I felt like I had missed something as the events seemed to lurch forward without any chance to understand why. Consequently, although Pines performance is really good, I found it very difficult to connect to his portrayal of Robert the Bruce. Florence Pugh’s Elizabeth Burgh fairs far better (continuing on from her superb performance in Lady Macbeth – one to watch out for).
It is a suitably muddy and bleak affair with some great visuals and brutal battle scenes. It’s just that it felt rushed with the characters not having room to breathe. The events of Braveheart are lurking around the edges and weigh heavily on the movie. I also felt like it had half the cast too!
Rating – 6/10
Should you go and see it – well no because it’s on Netflix. Worth a watch though if you have finished your pressing series binge-watching!
