What to watch at home this Christmas

Some great stuff on this Christmas. Some picks here (with links if you want to buy and keep):

Brooklyn – Sunday 16 December, 8pm, BBC Two

Great performance from the always excellent Saoirse Ronan. She moves to New York in the 1950s and is torn between new love and her past back home.

The Grand Budapest Hotel – Sunday 23 December, 11.20pm, Film4

I’m not always a fan of Wes Anderson but this is a brilliant funny caper. Ray Fiennes stands out as the legendary concierge Monsieur Gustave.

Zootropolis – Christmas Eve, 2.55pm, BBC One

Great kids animation that also has something to say. A decent watch for adults too.

Mary Poppins – Christmas Eve, 5pm, BBC One

This classic had to be on the list especially given the imminent arrival of its sequel starring Emily Blunt.

Saving Mr Banks – Boxing Day, 2.30pm, BBC Two

The story behind Mary Poppins. Great performances from Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

The Jungle Book – Christmas Day, 3.10pm, BBC One

Jon Favreau’s successful “live” action adaptation was an unexpected success. Love Bill Murray as Baloo.

Raiders of the Lost Ark – Boxing Day, 1.25pm, BBC One

In my opinion, probably the best ever action movie. Classic Spielberg and Harrison Ford.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Sunday 30 December, 8pm, ITV

JJ Abrahams achieved the impossible by delivering on expectations for this continuation of the Star Wars saga. Great balance between the old and new cast.

The Revenant – New Year’s Day, 10pm, BBC Two

Beautiful and brutal survival thriller from Alejandro González Iñárritu. Grounded by the performance of Leonardo DiCaprio. Tom Hardy’s villain, on the other hand, is hard to understand!!
