Top 10 – 2016

A year which features a double bill linked to the financial crisis. How it happened in the wickedly funny (and anger-inducing) The Big Short and the impact on the poor in I Daniel Blake (featuring the scene of the year in a food bank). Victoria was a great achievement in showing a crime gone wrong over the course of a night in what looks like one continuous shot. American Honey introduced the excellent Sasha Lane (great name too). Arrival was a great emotional Sci-Fi movie from Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049). Disney continued its great start to Star Wars with Rogue One (an excellent war movie that links directly into A New Hope). The Neon Demon was so striking with a brilliant soundtrack. It won’t be to everyone’s taste but I have become somewhat obsessed with it. Room was a sledgehammer of a story of a parents fight to protect their child. Brie Larson deserved the Oscar.
