So here we are, the last Marvel movie before Avengers End game next month. This is directed by Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson) and starring Brie Larson (Room), Samuel L Jackson (The Hateful Eight) and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One).
Here we have another origin tale, this time of the most powerful Avenger and one suspects a key player in Avengers End Game. I always find Marvel films to be perfectly entertaining but never great. This continues the trend. As expected Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson are fine. Captain Marvel is a good addition to the series and Brie Larson is both funny and a great action star here. I also really liked the way it is linked to the greater Marvel world.
However, the usual problems rear their head. As with most Marvel films, it lacks a decent villain. There are some nice twists but the aliens here just look like they walked off a Star Trek episode from the 60s. I am also bored with the old “they can look like us” move that seems to be in every sci-fi movie. The movie lacks scale and action scenes are a bit lacklustre. This is partly made up for by some great 90’s music and tech.
It has to be said that this is also important as another superhero film featuring a female hero front and centre. While not as good as DC’s Wonderwoman, it is a welcome addition.
So overall, an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours, but not a particularly memorable entry to the series. Having said that, if you are a fan, it is a must watch ahead of the upcoming finale to the Avengers series.
Rating: 7/10 – the standard mark for Marvel it seems.
Should you go and see it: Yes, it is fun, looks great and is an essential view for fans of the series, just a pity it wasn’t better given the importance of the character.
